To download new Tonie content or setup a Toniebox while on the move, you can connect the Toniebox to a mobile hotspot. You can provide this via your smartphone or similar device, and only turn it on when required. It's important to know that in order to connect the Toniebox to a mobile hotspot, you will need two devices, one to activate the mobile hotspot and a different device, like a different phone, computer, tablet, etc., to walk through the Toniebox setup process on. You will not be able to walk through the Toniebox setup process on the same device that is creating the mobile hotspot.
*Please note that mobile data is used when downloading data from the Toniecloud. This may lead to additional charges depending on your mobile phone contract. However, only small amounts of data are required to download new Toniebox software or new Tonie content. Our user software is just a few kilobytes. The amount of data required for audio content varies from 15 MB for around 20 minutes of content up to around 80 MB for around 120 minutes of content.
Note: After you have initially connected the Toniebox to a mobile hotspot, you will only need to keep that mobile hotspot turned on when downloading new Tonies to the Toniebox for the first time. After the Tonie(s) have been fully downloaded onto the Toniebox, the mobile hotspot can be turned off. For more details on downloading Tonies, please see our support article here: How do I download Tonies on my Toniebox?
Follow the steps below according to the device you are using (iPhone or Android) to find out how to activate a mobile hotspot:
iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + cellular) with iOS:
-
Open the 'Settings' app and tap the ‘Personal Hotspot’ section.
Note: If you are using an iPad as the mobile hotspot, tap on the 'Cellular' section. -
In the 'Personal Hotspot' screen, turn/toggle 'Allow Others to Join' at the top to On so that it is green.
- If you are using an iPhone 12 or newer, turn/toggle 'Maximize Compatibility' to On (green) before proceeding.
Note: Please ensure that Maximize Compatibility is enabled (green) if you see it as an option. If you do not see this option, simply proceed to the next step below.
The hotspot's password can be changed by tapping the 'Wi-Fi Password' field and then tapping the 'Done' button, if you would prefer to change this. The name of your specific hotspot (for this example, it is 'iPhone's Name') displayed in quotation marks (" ") under the 'TO CONNECT USING WIFI' section (towards the bottom of the screen), will be the network name you will be trying to connect to at the end of the Toniebox set up process.
-
Finally, to ensure the hotspot is up-to-date before connecting it to the Toniebox, and if you have made any changes, we recommend turning the 'Allow Others to Join' toggle at the top to Off (grey) for a few seconds, and then right back to On (green), to ensure the hotspot is updated for the smoothest experience.
- Once 'Allow Others to Join' is turned back On (green), simply keep it turned on, and then you are ready to walk through the Toniebox setup process on your other device.

Note: Depending on the device and Android software you are using, 'Connections' might be labeled as 'Network & Internet'.
- Tap on the ‘Mobile Hotspot and Tethering’ section.
- Tap on the dedicated 'Mobile Hotspot' section.
- Now, once on the 'Mobile Hotspot' screen, simply toggle the button at the top to 'On'.
- Once the Mobile Hotspot is turned/toggled On, under the hotspot's 'Network name' and 'Password' fields, verify that the 'Band' is set to 2.4GHz before proceeding.
Note: The hotspot's 'Network name' and 'Password' can be changed by tapping on either field or tapping on a 'Configure' button at the bottom, if you would prefer to change these details. The name of your specific hotspot (for this example, it is 'MyPhoneName') displayed on this screen will be the network name you will be trying to connect to at the end of the Toniebox set up process.
- Finally, to ensure the hotspot is up-to-date before connecting it to the Toniebox, and if you have made any changes, we recommend turning the Mobile Hotspot toggle at the top to 'Off' for a few seconds, and then right back 'On', to ensure the hotspot is updated for the smoothest experience.
- Once the Mobile Hotspot is turned back 'On', simply keep it turned on, and then you are ready to walk through the Toniebox setup process on your other device.
