Attention, spiky! The hedgehog indicates a connection problem with your router. Please select from the below options, so we can provide the best possible solution and get you up and running with your Toniebox as soon as possible!
The hedgehog came up during the initial installation of the Toniebox.
To find out what exactly has attracted the hedgehog, please check first:
- Should you have purchased the Toniebox prior to 15 October 2022 please click here.
- If you have purchased your Toniebox after 15 October 2022 please check the serial number. You can find the sticker with the serial number on the original package of your Toniebox. If you no longer have the packaging, you will also find the serial number on the sticker underneath your Toniebox.
- Your serial number starts with 22 and continues with numbers between 33 and 43
- Next to the 5th character are numbers between 140 to 145 or 161 to 166
Here is an example of what such a serial number might look like:
If your Toniebox fits this scheme, the following information is particularly important to you (If your serial number does not meet the above conditions, please click here):
Most importantly: Your Toniebox is perfectly fine and usable. It just needs to update its software that allows it to connect to your home Wi-Fi. In order to get your Toniebox online for the software update, you need to connect it via the mobile hotspot of a smartphone instead of via your router. Once the Toniebox is online, it will download the software update and allows you to connect it to your home Wi-Fi.
The following step by step tutorial contains 4 steps which will take about 20 minutes. You will need your Toniebox plus Charger and two devices: One smartphone to set up a mobile hotspot and one additional smartphone, tablet or computer to start the setup process. We will guide you through the following 4 steps:
- Reset your Toniebox to factory settings
- Activate the mobile hotspot on your smartphone
- Setup your Toniebox via mobile hotspot
- Connect the Toniebox to your home Wi-Fi

If you prefer step-by-step instructions, check them out below:
1. Reset your Toniebox to factory settings
- Place the Toniebox on the charging station (while connected to the power supply) and then turn them both upside down so the ears are pointing downwards.
- While the Toniebox is upside down, pinch and hold both Toniebox ears simultaneously until you hear an audio tone (for about 10 seconds).
- Turn the Toniebox back upright and remove the Toniebox from the charging station for a moment and then place it back on.
2. Set up the mobile hotspot on your smartphone
- Activate the mobile hotspot on your smartphone. If you're not familiar with activating a mobile hotspot on your smartphone, have a look here.
- If it's available, please ensure ‘Maximise Compatibility’ (iPhone) or ‘Extend Compatibility’ (Android) is toggled on.
- Check on your second device (the one you will use to start the setup process) if the mobile hotspot is available in the Wi-Fi menu. If it's not, switch Wi-Fi off and on again and check again. Only proceed with the next step if the mobile hotspot is available.
3. Set up the Toniebox via mobile hotspot
- Visit my.tonies.com/setup via web browser or start the setup process in the mytonies app on your second device (not the phone you are using for the mobile hotspot).
- During the setup process, when asked to ‘Choose your Wi-Fi’ please select the mobile hotspot you set up in step 2. Note: if the mobile hotspot doesn't appear in the Wi-Fi list type in the network in the ‘manual option‘.
- As soon as the Toniebox says "Great! Now I'm ready for the Tonies! Have fun!" and the LED shows solid green, your Toniebox is set up and has downloaded the updated software.
4. Connect the Toniebox to your home Wi-Fi
- Visit my.tonies.com/wifi and follow the instructions. For this you can use whatever device you prefer.
- The connection is established when you hear an audio signal ("Ta-daa!") and the LED of your Toniebox shows solid green again. This means you’re all set up!

If your serial number does not match the above scheme, or if you have not purchased your Toniebox before the 15. October 2022,the following steps are necessary for you to get rid of the hedgehog.
We know it sounds trivial, but often the hedgehog just shows up when you too far away from the router. Please make sure that your Toniebox is close enough to the router and then try again, connect the Toniebox to the Wi-Fi or download a new Tonie. You can check whether the connection quality is sufficient with the help of the WLAN display on your smartphone: If you have full reception, you are close enough to the router.
If this doesn't help, please follow the steps below:
- Reboot your router by unplugging it, waiting 10 to 15 seconds and then plugging it back in.The waiting time is important so that all parts of the router have no power for a short time and you can make a clean restart. During the reboot, the router clears its cache and deletes unnecessary connection data. This clears the path for the Toniebox.
The Toniebox is now back in the factory settings. Please repeat the Setup process onmy.tonies.com/setup or restart the setup process via the mytonies app.

- While the Toniebox is upside down, pinch and hold both Toniebox ears simultaneously until you hear an audio tone (for about 10 seconds).
- Turn the Toniebox back upright.
Please try again to connect your Toniebox with an additional Wi-Fi via my.tonies.com/wifi

Note for technical specialists
You may have set your Wi-Fi router in such a way that you have to manually assign a static IP to new devices. The Toniebox requires a DHCP server for operation. This should be activated by default in every Wi-Fi router. It is best to check the settings or the operating instructions of your router to find out how to do this. If this works, try to connect your Toniebox to the Wi-Fi again.
