Whoa. A Turtle! You might think the Toniebox has hidden in a little shell and doesn’t want to come out. One thing’s for sure: The code word ‘turtle’ indicates that the Toniebox cannot find your known Wi-Fi network, when you put on a new Tonie, for instance.
One of the following may be the reason for this error message:
- You are currently travelling and the Toniebox wants to connect to a Wi-Fi network.
-
You were given the Toniebox and it doesn’t know your Wi-Fi network yet as it was originally installed in another place and/or on another network.
or
- Your Wi-Fi configuration has changed since the Toniebox was installed. Have you perhaps:
- got a new router?
- changed your service provider?
- changed the name of your Wi-Fi network, i.e. the SSID?
- changed the Wi-Fi password?
- changed the security settings on your router?
- turned off the 2.4 GHz frequency range on your router or switched to 5 GHz?
- started up or turned off a repeater?

If you hear the code word ‘turtle’ while you are travelling, the Toniebox would like to connect to the Toniecloud to download the content of the Tonie you have put on.
If you have access to an open Wi-Fi network, you can simply connect the Toniebox to this network using our setup assistant.
The Toniebox can connect to a mobile hotspot provided by a smartphone, for instance, without a hitch. You can find out exactly how this works here in our help centre article: How do I activate a mobile hotspot?.
Please note that the Toniebox cannot connect to hotspots with an upstream login page, i.e. what is known as a ‘captive portal’ (link to Wikipedia).
If you still can't get any further, please get in touch with our support, ideally stating your Toniebox ID directly.

You were given the Toniebox and it doesn’t know your Wi-Fi network yet as it was originally installed in another place and/or on another network.
No problem: The Toniebox can remember up to 7 different networks. You can simply connect it to another Wi-Fi network using our setup assistant. Please note that the Toniebox cannot connect to hotspots with an upstream login page, i.e. what is known as a ‘captive portal’ (link to Wikipedia).

Please set up the new Wi-Fi network with our setup assistant.
… changed the security settings on your router?
Please check whether advanced settings preventing connection with the network (e.g. MAC address filter, firewall, guest network configuration) are active in your router.
… turned off the 2.4 GHz frequency range on your router or switched to 5 GHz?
Please activate the 2.4 GHz frequency range. Networks transmitting on 5 GHz are invisible to the Toniebox.
… started up or turned off a repeater?
Please check first of all that the Toniebox is close enough to the Wi-Fi signal.
Your repeater may create an additional network with its own login details. Then simply set up the relevant Wi-Fi with the Help of our setup assistant.
If you have a repeater with its own login details for the Wi-Fi, you may need to set up your main device's Wi-Fi. Our setup assistant can also help you with this.
